Some days it goes far beyond obnoxious: those stupid little Facebook groups that start up for no other reason than: "An Onion Ring is more interesting than Justin Beiber", or "I Like Hugs", or "I Sit on FB and Wait for U 2 cum online."
Drivel. A beautiful testament to our society's need for triviality and useless crap.
But what happens when an FB page, or any page on a social networking site, goes past stupid and insipid and crosses into offensive and cruel?
The group was broadcast across my FB page today: "killing your hooker so you don't have to pay her" (22,000 approximately). The pic shows a man pretending to harm the woman. It's so disgusting that it hardly deserves any response at all. But if everyone ignores these types of groups because they're not really real anyway, or people join "just cuz", or "it's funny!"... then we're going to have more than a plethora of debasing pages crossing our screens.
Grand Theft Auto gives you money when you kill your hooker. With a golf club, I'm told. How novel. How repulsive. REAL women in REAL time are suffering this crime everyday and we mock them? We think it's funny? We think because it's just a stupid FB page or a video game, it's not a big deal? Who's bright idea was it to sit down and think "Hmmm, today I think I'll gather lots of people together who think it's funny that we kill our hookers (if we had them) before we paid them. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!"
Someone took time out of their obviously wasting lives to do that? And people are signing up by the thousands??? Not just youth, but adults??? I wonder how hard they'd laugh if they actually heard stories from survivors of violence like this? Would it change their humour at all?
Maybe. Maybe not.
Some people just seem to care only about their own fun... even if it's at the expense of the lives of others
